Mastery

Students work towards mastery in each of the Core Competencies and 2-4 of the Advanced Competencies through project work. For each project students complete, they submit a reflection justifying that it demonstrates a level of mastery in each relevant competency.

Throughout their time at Barefoot Technology Academy, students build a portfolio of projects and reflections, and develop their mastery transcript.

Students have mastered a subject when they are fluent, even creative, in using their knowledge, skills and understanding in key contexts at the heart of that subject… You haven't mastered a subject if you only possess skills and facts in isolation.

- Grant Wiggins, Center on Learning, Assessment, and School Structure

Core Competencies

Students need to demonstrate mastery across all core competencies. Core Competency mastery is demonstrated through projects, class discussion, and reflection.

Advanced Competencies

Students choose to specialize in two or more advanced competencies. Advanced competencies are demonstrated via large-scale projects equivalent to a thesis, dissertation, or capstone.

Competency frameworks from industry and education experts

Where the competencies come from

The competencies were developed in conjunction with a group of industry and education experts, adapted from the Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education from The American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU), and aligned with the ISTE Standards For Students.

We also took inspiration from OneStone's Growth Transcript, the Great Schools Partnership, and PBLWorks.
