Hi, I'm Rory Foulger, the Founding Director of Barefoot Technology Academy. I started this because I've spent years working with brilliant, curious kids who hate school. Not because they hate learning, but because school hasn’t been built for minds like theirs. Most of the young people I’ve worked with are gifted or twice-exceptional. They’re intense, creative, and often stuck in systems that try to shrink them down. I believe they deserve something radically better. Not just more support, but a whole new way of doing school.
I’ve been obsessed with education since I was a twice-exceptional eleven-year-old reading radical pedagogy books and plotting the downfall of traditional schooling. These days, I’m doing something a little more constructive. Barefoot Technology Academy is the kind of school I needed, and the kind so many of our students need, too.
My background is a mix of computational science, education, and design. I’ve studied at Minerva University, University College London, and Falmouth University; I’ve built code-centered learning programs, run international STEM education initiatives, and designed project-based curricula for gifted and neurodiverse students. Since 2019, I’ve been the Pre-College Education Programs Director at Wolfram Research, helping students use computation to explore complex, interdisciplinary problems through computer science.
At Barefoot, we do things differently. We build real things. We code. We question. We get things wrong and we fail and we do better tomorrow. We believe that curiosity, complexity, and agency aren’t problems: they’re the whole point.
If you're looking for a school that actually sees you: your intensity, your weirdness, your brilliance, then this place was built for you.
Zuko brings boundless energy, excellent snoozing form, and a deep commitment to interrupting video calls at just the right moment. As Pawfessor of Morale, he specializes in sudden bursts of affection, dramatic sighs during long meetings, and ensuring no sock remains unchewed. While small in size, his impact on the Barefoot community’s emotional wellbeing is profound.
He is currently pursuing advanced studies in lap-warming and treat acquisition, with a minor in selective obedience. His research interests include crinkly toys, his own reflection, and the metaphysical implications of being “the bestest boy.”
